World Forum for Democracy

The World forum for democracy convened between 5th-11th October in Strasbourg. The Robert Schuman Foundation, one of the event's partners, organised a round table on 10th October together with the European Movement-France entitled "Europe, a global player?" Jean-Dominique Giluliani, the Foundation's Chairman, moderated the debate with a group of experts including Simon Serfaty, Kinga Brudzinska, Carine Dartiguepeyrou, Michel Foucher and Maxime Lefebvre.
The first World Forum for Democracy that took place from 5th to 11th October 2012 is a Council of Europe initiative, which, since its creation in 1949, has been promoting pluralist democracy and the respect of human rights. The Forum is part of the partnership concluded between the Council of Europe and the city of Strasbourg on 7th May 2010.
Which forces will shape future democratic societies? Will the new means of expression that have emerged with the Arab Spring lead to long term stability? And can they be a source of inspiration for the reforms that the established western democracies have to undertake? These are the issues that have become the leitmotif in discussions at the Forum in the search of democratic answers to economic, social and political challenges facing modern societies.

He moderated the debate that took place with experts such as Kinga Brudzinska (Polish Institute for International Affairs), Carine Dartiguepeyrou (Consultant in development strategy), Michel Foucher (Diplomat, Institut des hautes études de défense nationale), Maxime Lefebvre (Deputy Forecasting Director, Foreign and European Affairs Ministry) and Simon Serfati (Director of the Centre for International and Strategic Studies, Washington D.C).
