The vision of an American on the EU
The Robert Schuman Foundation organized in Paris, on April 19, 2012, a discussion on the subject "Is the European way still the best hope in these uncertain times?" with the American author Steven Hill. Introduced by Jean-Dominique Giuliani, Chairman of the Foundation, this debate gathered, among others, Xavier de Villepin, member of the Board of Directors of the Foundation, Alain Lancelot, Chairman of the Scientific Committee of the Foundation and Philip Suremain, member of the scientific Committee of the Foundation.
While comparing the U.S. and Europe, Steven Hill presented how the EU is the model to follow. However, he stressed the need for it to move forwards, towards more integration. Modeled on the American model, Steven Hill thinks that the EU should move towards "a transfer union." Aware, however, that Europe today is a "two-speed Europe", he believes that this integration process should happen initially within the Euro zone and then spread to other member states. Finally, he concluded by saying that the construction of the United States had been slow and that despite its values of solidarity and communitarianism the EU also needed time to define itself.
