Conference at the Medef - "Does international finance need a European compass?"

The Robert Schuman Foundation organised an evening debate on the theme "Does international finance need a European compass?" in partnership with the Medef. This seminar is one of a series of meetings organised as the French presidency of the European Union approaches on the initiative of Jérôme Bédier, chairman of the 'Commission Europe' at the Medef.

The following personalities spoke during this debate:
• Jean-Dominique Giuliani, Chairman of the Robert Schuman Foundation.
• Jérôme Bédier, Chairman of the "Commission Europe" for the Medef.
• Gérard de la Martinière, Chairman of the Finance Committee of the Medef, Chairman of the French Federation of Insurance Companies.
• Jean-Paul Betbèze, Director of economic and financial studies at the Crédit Agricole and Member of the Scientific Committee of the Robert Schuman Foundation.
• Jean du Rusquec, Official representative for the Chairman of Total.
• Renaud Berenguier, Associate Director of Aurel, a sister company of the American Group BGC Partners.
The debate that was hosted by journalist/economist Arnaud Fleury focussed on the international financial crisis that started in the USA on 7th and 8th August 2007. During discussions participants reviewed the origins of the crisis (USA sub-primes). After analysing the effects of the crisis on the various financial markets they looked into the opportunities of finding a European solution to this crisis.
