UMP Convention on Europe

The chairman of the Robert Schuman Foundation, Jean-Dominique Giuliani took part in the UMP Convention on Europe on 30th January at the Maison de la Mutualité (Europe: let's build our future together"). This Convention provided an opportunity for debate with two round tables including themes as varied at the achievement and issues at stake within the new European treaty, the place given to the "small countries" in the European Union, the conception of common policies, notably in terms of immigration, energy and defence and the possible integration of new member countries. The day concluded with a speech by the President of the French Republic, Nicolas Sarkozy and Angela Merkel, Chancellor of the Federal Republic of Germany.

Jean-Dominique Giuliani spoke at the second round table on the future French presidency of the European Union that is to start in the second half of 2008. He spoke alongside Jacques Barrot (former Minister, Vice-President of the European Commission, European Commissioner for Transport), Joachim Bitterlich (Executive Vice President of Veolia Environment for international affairs), Antoine Herth (the UMP's National Secretary for Agriculture, MP Bas-Rhin), Brice Hortefeux (Immigration, Integration, National Identity and Co-development Minister, political advisor to the UMP), and Pierre Lellouche (MP, Councillor for the city of Paris). The debate was chaired by Hubert Haenel (President of the Senate delegation for the European Union, Senator for the Haut-Rhin).
The day concluded with a speech by the President of the French Republic, Nicolas Sarkozy and Angela Merkel, Chancellor of the Federal Republic of Germany.
During her speech Angela Merkel supported the French President and his Prime Minister François Fillon for their determination to undertake reform: "We want France to be strong both in its reforms and during its presidency of the European Union [...] It is a good and fair thing for the French government to have started its reforms," she said.
For his part the French President recalled that it was vital for Germany and France to move forwards together with regard to European issues in the face of new challenges arising as a result of globalisation since "Europe needs co-operation on the part of both of our countries."
